Heiress, socialite and fashion icon Paris Hilton did have a pop single at number six in the UK charts but her writing skills have not been as well received. Her autobiography, 'Confessions of an Heiress', is the book that most frequently gets left behind in hotel rooms.
Budget hotel chain Travelodge today announced it has collected over 6000 books that customers have discarded in their rooms within the last year. The top five titles for 2006 have, bizarrely, all been celebrity autobiographies.
Paris, heiress to the Hilton Hotel empire, hit the number one spot with over a hundred copies of her 2004 autobiography being left in Travelodge hotels up and down the country.
Second in the poll of abandoned authors was the charismatic Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho. His autobiography 'Made in Portugal' penned in 2004, charts his rise from humble beginnings as assistant coach to Sir Bobby Robson to the most sought-after club manager in Europe taking Chelsea to premiership victory twice.
Britain's most loved glamour girl Jordan, aka Katie Price, made third place. Her second book 'A Whole New World' sold a whopping 300,000 copies in the first six weeks of its release in January. Her previous title, 'Being Jordan', sold close to a million copies, making her one of the most successful British authors of the last five years.
Big Brother's most famous housemate Jade Goody came fourth in the Travelodge list, which is quite a feat for the former dental nurse from Bermondsey. Jade launched to fame for her regular faux-pas in the Big Brother house and the nation warmed to her linguistic gaffes. But Jade has had the last laugh with her biography entitled 'Jades World' contributing to making her the first millionaire to emerge from the reality show.
Completing the top five discarded reads was autobiography, 'Managing my Life' by Sir Alex Ferguson.
Kyle Rowe, Travelodge Operations Director, said: "Reading a book is the perfect pasttime whilst staying in a hotel, especially when you are on your own. Its the one time you can relax and be guaranteed of no interruptions.
"We have been very surprised by the findings in our 2006 'Forgotten Books Inventory'. Its the first time ever, the top five books have all been celebrity autobiographies. It just shows we have become a nation fixated with celebrities and their lifestyles. All unwanted books are donated to local hospitals and charity shops for people to enjoy reading."
The Harry Potter series of books which have sold more than 265 million copies in 200 countries were the most popular fiction books to be left behind at Travelodge hotels.
