Travelodge joins Ellen MacArthur Foundation Network

17th March 2025

Travelodge has joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Network. It is currently the only UK hotel chain in the Network.

As a Network member, the hotel chain, which is the UK’s first budget hotel brand,  aims to engage with the Foundation and other Network organisations to develop circular business models, specifically in relation to the built environment, food, marketing, policy, and supply chains.

The collaboration is intended to support Travelodge in building circular business models and more broadly support the wider transition to a circular economy — which is driven by design to eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials, and regenerate nature.

Claire Good, Chief Operating Officer, Travelodge said: “We are proud to join the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Network.

“Sustainability is integral to our business strategy and we look forward to working with the Foundation and utilising its knowledge and networks to develop a more circular business model.”

Katie Attrill, Network Manager, Ellen MacArthur Foundation said: “We are pleased to welcome Travelodge to our Network and look forward to helping it achieve its circular economy ambitions.”

Travelodge is focussing on its environmental and social impact through its Better Future sustainability plan, which aims to build a more sustainable future for its customers, colleagues and the planet. The plan is underpinned by three core pillars:

  • Inclusive – ensuring it’s accessible, inclusive and well-priced to customers and colleagues;
  • Caring – creating a caring and healthy environment for colleagues and customers and ensuring their wellbeing;
  • Conscious – awareness  of its impact on the planet, taking into account the waste it produces, the energy and other resources it consumes and the carbon emissions it generates.

Over the last year, Travelodge has been focussing on;

  • Completing its total carbon footprint assessment
  • Conducting its first calculation of scope 3 emissions
  • Introduction of food recycling into all of its Bar Café hotels
  • Reduction in annual average water usage by 3 litres per guest – equivalent to annual savings of 66,543 m3
  • Diversion of 97% of waste from hotel refurbishments from landfill.

About the Ellen MacArthur Foundation

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is an international charity whose mission is to accelerate the transition to a circular economy in order to tackle some of the biggest challenges of our time, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. Launched in 2010, the Foundation works with its Network to build capacity, explore collaborative opportunities, and design and develop circular economy initiatives and solutions. Increasingly based on renewable energy, a circular economy is driven by design to eliminate waste, circulate products and materials at their highest value, and regenerate nature, to create resilience and prosperity for business, the environment, and people.
