New research* has revealed Brits are shunning making love at bedtime in favour of cuddling up with a good book. Almost half of all British adults (44%) said reading is their favourite activity when hitting the pillow.

More than three times as many women would prefer to nod off with a novel (49%) than enjoy a bit of romance with a partner (14%). The gap is less pronounced with men, although reading is still the clear favourite - 29% of British men prefer it, compared to the 21% that prioritise making love.

The survey of 2000 UK adults carried out for Travelodge also identified the nation's favourite books at bedtime.

Dan Brown's bestselling blockbuster The Da Vinci Code topped the list. It beat strong competition from classic favourites including Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
